Ledgers and Joists

This past weekend we were down to Matt and two kids working, with one additional adult (brothers-in-law are awesome, you know?) for a couple hours in the morning.

The installation of joists commenced!

Matt had commented some time ago that this beam atop the brick “was probably pretty bad.”

Well, well, well, whaddya know?

Goodbye to that old beam, hello to the new one they installed! This was the VERY LAST beam needing to be replaced on this project.

Our 12-year-old and 8-year-old both learned a lot. This can probably go on their homeschool report card as a for-credit elective, no?

Such as, Construction 101.

And: Teamwork 201.

Here, our son scribes lines for the joist hangers using a speed square.

Not pictured: He also pulled all 1.43 million staples out of the ceiling of the mudroom. Seriously, that took some tenacity.

The laser level’s batteries ran out, necessitating a short snack break while at the store. Kids run out of juice too!

The north wall’s ledger board needed some creative fitting around the brick. Painstaking detail work.

Saturday’s work ended here. It’s far enough along the HVAC company can come do their thing!
