Moving the Bathroom: Backstory, Part 3

Part 1 is here: How It Began and Part 2 is here: The Backstory, Part 2: The Floor Plan Change

When I showed Matt my proposed floor plan change, he had only one concern:

“Are you sure? We have a limited time before we have to move in, and we’d probably have everything functional, but it isn’t going to look pretty for awhile after we move in.”

Yes. I was sure. I would much rather wait a little longer and have what I actually wanted in the long run than quick-fix up the bathroom space we had, and then be stuck with that for an extended period of time because we had invested in it.

So demolition began. It felt icky, tearing into this place that we had just bought “move-in ready”, getting farther away from ready to move in, with our rental’s lease end date bearing down on us.

But we needed a bathroom to live there, and if we were going to move the bathroom, then it needed to happen asap. So demo Matt did.

One wall of the kitchen went. Somehow I hadn’t mentally figured beforehand that it was going to affect the kitchen (um, duh) so that took some recalibration. Okaaay, no kitchen sink. Got it.

The back wall of the fourth bedroom went. I wasn’t sad; it was a bizarre wall of cabinets and drawers that somehow qualified as a closet for the real estate listing.

The floor plan started opening up, we could start envisioning how this was going to go…

And then Matt called me.

“Do you want the bad news or the really bad news first?”
